his pincher grasp is getting better

his pincher grasp is getting better
July 12, 2025
It starts with a piece of fruit.
Juicy. Slippery.
A tangerine.
The kind of fruit that gives too easily when squeezed,
but resists just enough to teach patience.

He reaches with his whole hand first.
Misses.
Tries again.
Most of his early attempts were all-hand.
Now it’s more thumb and finger.
Just the tips.

And now,
he gets it.

He holds it like it might fly away.
Like he knows how long it took him to get here.
His attempts to feed himself are getting better too.
Fewer misses now.

I watch him study it.
Then crush it slightly.
Then study it again.

It’s control.
It’s a brain-to-finger connection.
I remember reading about.
when he was still several ultrasounds away from being in my arms.

And now it’s happening,
on a tray covered in mango and drool and curiosity.

His pincher grasp is getting better.

And somehow,
so is mine.
