LEAVING A MARK

LEAVING A MARK
5 20 26
I made this shirt myself.

I distressed it with a Dremel.
I dyed it too.

The marks were intentional.

With the shirt, I could decide where the fabric would give. I could alter it directly.

With a child, that kind of control would be wrong.

Fatherhood has made me think differently about influence.

Not every mark comes from force.
Some come from tone.
Repetition.
Atmosphere.
Touch.
Presence.

There are things you make by changing them directly.

And there are things you care for by resisting that urge.
