I had just finished making formula. Sarah was stacking the last toys into their large cotton rope basket. We were hungry and unsure. It was almost 1 a.m. I opened the fridge like a question. Leftover noodles showed up first. Then the beef we bought earlier. Then it started to come together. Olive oil. The Caraway pan. Mushrooms took the heat until they softened. The beef followed and turned brown, slow and steady. A generous pour of broth to lift the pan. A little heavy cream. Grated parmesan. Spinach cut small and folded in at the end. A few drops of Bragg Liquid Aminos. A pinch of sea salt to bring it home. He was asleep by then. His portion would wait until morning. We do not make separate meals here. Just one. One for all of us. Everything was made with care. Care over perfection. And still, it came out whole.
